Now in its third year at Roosevelt High School, and over a decade and counting as an independent school music program, the Deep Roots Music Project added a new dimension this year. The North Portland School's participating student lyricists, known as the St. Johns Poets, participated in a March 20-25 living history trip to Alabama and Atlanta, Georgia. There, they explored the history of our nation's civil rights movement. (pictured: l to r Cody Palmer, Jermeisha Hampton, China Lundy recording this podcast at MastanMusic Studio.)
In preparation for a ten mile walk, titled “A Day In The Life Of Martin Luther King,” the students studied the civil rights movement of the 1950’s and 1960’s and also the political music that grew out of the events of the time. By reenacting King's famous 1965 jaunt, the young writers came home with a sense of what it was like to march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, back in 1965, when black Americans were taking a stand for their right to vote.
Two of the traveling students have collaborated on a song, which will appear on The St. Johns Poetry Sessions, Volume III, about this historic event of change. The new Roosevelt Deep Roots CD will be released May 21st 2009. You can hear this amazing song "My Change My Gain" with lyrics by Aundre Lesure and U'Aundrick Nath-Clark in this episode of The MastanMusic Hour.
MastanMusic Studio and producer Jeremy Wilson also celebrate three years participation in this fine project. Five of the ten tracks for the new CD were recorded right here at MastanMusic Studio. We hope you will enjoy this in-depth SPECIAL FEATURE on this year's Roosevelt High School Deep Roots Music Project class. In this Episode we have one of our all time favorite Portland punk rock outfits, New York Rifles - we recorded them last October before the release of their latest CD, Make A Wish (Buy at CDBaby) that came out in March on In Music We Trust records.
New York Rifles are fresh off a West Coast Tour, so if you didn't have the pleasure of seeing them live, well at least you can hear them here. Catch Scott Young on vocals, guitar, Sean Moultrie on drums, Kari Schafer on vocal, keyboard, and guitar duty and Brent Williams on bass and vocals as they rock you in one of the coolest most high energy sets the MastanMusic Hour has hosted. These guys created a great vibe and we think we captured a really great performance. Please do enjoy!

hails from Vancouver, WA. A new face on the local music scene, he's taking stages by storm all over Portland and beyond as an opening act for portland's own Tony Smiley. For Episode 51 Part 2 of the MastanMusic Hour, The Posies
Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow stopped by and turned in a rare acoustic set. Armed only with two guitars and their sweet sounding voices, they took us on a journey through their intelligent and flowery pop world. The five song set touches on songs from throughout their career and delivers the hits with renditions of "Dream All Day" and "Suddenly Mary" coming off quite nicely. Though they've always been consummate professionals, their time playing onstage with heavy hitters such as REM and Big Star seems to have informed and en-lived their stage presence. Their 20 year anniversary Portland tour stop at Dante's (following the recording of this podcast), was a reminder that they are still firing on all cylinders and kicking out the rock like never before. Congratulations to the Posies on 20 years of inspired music! (photos of the Posies by Juliana Tobon)

Episode 21 Featuring Stephanie Schneiderman and Tony Furtado
Episode 21 Parts 1 and 2
Though Stephanie Schneiderman and Tony Furtado each have separate and thriving careers, they have collaborated on several projects together, so we were thrilled to get these two musical mavens in the studio together for part 2, the live portion of The MastanMusic Hour.
Part one begins with a track from Portland quartet Jonah, who are exploding onto the national scene right now with their March 2007 release, Trust Everyone Before They Break Your Heart. Next up we have a track from Hangover Bicycle Ride the forthcoming Mastan Music Label release by Silverhawk. Episode 21 part one also features a track by Scotland Barr and The Slow Drags, an interview with Cindy Ingram who's pulling off KIDZ Rock, the largest youth rock event Oregon has ever seen! Next up is Chez Stadium, a band we like so much, that we're playing not one, but two tracks off their debut CD Freshman Slump. And we close out the show with a band that comes to us all the way from Orlando, Florida, Mumpsy.

Episode 20 Featuring Lew Jones
Episode 20 Parts 1 and 2 We're thrilled and honored to feature the extraordinary talent of Lew Jones on Episode 20's Part 2 live portion of The MastanMusic Hour.
Shortly after moving to Portland, Oregon at the tender age of 18, MastanMusic's Jeremy Wilson found a musical mentor in Lew Jones-- and the relationship has continued to bear fruit for both artists, to this day.
As Lew attests, "In early 2000 I began work on my CD Sublimation with Kurt Cobain's mentor Jeremy Wilson from the Dharma Bums. That alone got the CD press."
Lew has a new CD coming out this summer, and if you find yourself in Portland on any given Thursday, stop by The Wine Down (126 NE 28th Ave.) for an evening of music you won't soon forget.

Episode 14 Featuring The Sort Ofs
In Episode 14 pt.2 of the MastanMusic Hour we're proud to host the live "agitprop" sounds of The Sort Ofs. These live takes of songs from their new CD "Anxiety On Parade" are dynamic and captivating.
Read what critics are saying about it. The Portland Tribune "It’s rare for a band to come out of the gate with a debut as impressive and confident as “Anxiety on Parade." The Oregonian "Robley and his bandmate, drummer John Stewart, let their arty impulses run wild. There's a pop appeal to the tunes but broad instrumental flourishes and an almost arena-rock sense of drama break out frequently," PLAZM Magazine "Aptly assisted by John Stewart and a cast of talented local players, Robley’s thoughtful journal scribblings have found their comfortable musical home on Anxiety on Parade." The Mercury "Have you heard the tight, magnificently perfect pop wizardry they wield?" We had a blast recording this show! We hope you enjoy this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it. Great job Sort Ofs!
Episode 14 pt.1 of the MastanMusic Hour presents a featured showcase of talent from Eugene, Oregon. In this episode, we focus on up and coming indie rock and pop music coming from labels Leisure King, Happy Mistake and My Horoscope Records.
Episode 13 - In Part 2 of the MastanMusic Hour we feature a live set with talented singer-songwriter Lael Alderman. In front of a packed studio guest audience Lael debuts a brand new, never before heard batch of what we hope will soon be hits. The MastanMusic Hour is proud to present this stellar and intimate look at one of Portland's finest tune-smiths.
In Part 1 of Episode 13 we have guest DJs musical group The Dimes! Recently back in town from their West Coast tour, they brought in a great playlist of local bands for Part 1 as a collective shout-out to fellow musicians they're sharing stages with, as well as a couple of choice new songs of their own.
This week we present a retrospective feature on local luminary Mike Coykendall to celebrate the release of his debut solo effort, Hello Hello Hello (Stereotype Records). Mike's album, his latest work in a long line of great recordings, is definitely not to be missed. Take a look back with us on the musical career of the enigmatic songsmith and Portland icon in Part 2 of this edition of the MastanMusic Hour.
Episode 11 Part 2 invites talented Portland, OR blues man and wayfaring folk authority Rollie Tussing into the studio. He's promoting his upcoming release, "Secret Society of the Diminished Seven," due out any day now. We want you to wish him luck too! In February, Rollie, a world class slide guitarist and finger-picker, will be competing at the 23rd annual International Blues Challenge in Memphis, Tenn., representing the Cascade Blues Association after emerging as first place winner in their regional competition.
We had a great time rockin out with this one-man band and think it's one of our best shows yet. You can also check out more Mp3 interviews with Rollie in the BLOG SECTION of this website that we couldn't include in the podcast.
In Part 1 we go back to the garage with Seattle's, The Snakebites and the forever rocking and influential, The Fastbacks. Our hometown Portland reps., this week include, returning by popular demand, Titans of Oblivion with the Cavemanish Boys, Mike Coykendall and Dave Stoops all making their MM Hour debuts. We also bring you The Heise Bros. from Minneapolis, enjoy!

Episode 7 Featuring Delano
Delano strayed from their psychedelic jam band roots, made a few changes in their lineup, and on the verge of releasing their first full album entitled Scapegoat Fiction (recorded and mixed right here at Mastan Music)have emerged with a fully realized vision and sound deserving of attention. Delano has successfully amalgamated rock, pop, and electro into an album that is nothing short of epic. With grateful nods to past and current artists, the band has put together a group of songs that not only seek to be musically relevant, but socially conscious as well.

Well, the first episode of The MastanMusic Hour was truly remarkable and proved to be an exercise in exploring new web technologies. In our continuing effort to be more effective in our creative pursuits and marketing outreach we decided to create a web portal and reached out to web firm, Corporate Big LLC to get it done.
We are now more familiar than we want to be with a new form of cryptic speak, the acronyms necessary for outreach on the world wide web. MP3, ID3, RSS, podcasting, CSS, and we could go on but our heads are hurting again. Believe me, we went and learned it so that you won't have to. Phew!
Anyway, without further adieu, in this episode please enjoy a sojourn through some of our engineer's early and current musical works and conclude with a nice juicy live acoustic session with our best friend, Dylan-Thomas Vance.
